Which bearings are you looking to "upgrade"?

Our reels do not come with bears. Bears can be found in the wild, the circus or the local zoo.

If the bearings are worn, have particulate inside of them, or corroded, then it imay advisable to upgrade to ABEC-5 from Shimano, or ABEC-7 from a reputable source. If the reel is never going to see saltwater you may even consider ceramic bearings. However, if the stock bearings are in good working order, and you are actually going to fish with the reel, then replacing the bearings with "upgraded" bearings is not worth the money.

I have seen a number of people "upgrade" reels with after market bearings that have gone bad at the first wiff of saltwater. If you buy the bearings from Ebay for $25 per ten bearings, then you will probably get what you pay for. I have had limited experience with ceramic bearings in saltwater, and none of it has been good.

This is just my honest opinion, because I have gotten a little tired of folks pushing bearing "upgrades". I do not sell bearings, and when I replace them in a reel, it is at cost.

The trick with the ceramics is to lubricate them before hand and let them bleed out. You dont have that Metal to Metal contact with ceramics and you can run them dry to get that maximum casting distance. problem is if you over lube them it slows them down. I lube the ones I put in with a blend from Royal Purple and let them bleed out. That way the inside of that bearing gets a good protective coating and you still get smooth casting and distance. I've not had any issues so far. It depends on the manufacture as well. I've used some I wasnt to pleased with and settled on Boca. My .02

Sorry I couldn't resist the bear comment.

I would recommend the new S-ARB bearings. So far they have proven to hold up very well in saltwater.
