Got a Calcutta 400B as a gift

What/where is this reel most used for? I normally use a Curado.

Sight casting to rolling tarpon is perfect for that reel. 25-30 lb mono with 75 yards of 100 lb braid on an FTU tarpon rod. Throw seahawks and coon pops and let the fun begin.

Surf/Jetty Reds both slot and bulls. Also Kings casting plugs/poppers and Spoons.

Spool with 30lb braid topped with 100yrds 20lb mono.

Thanks fellas. This reel is really smooth. Gonna have to go tarpon fishing sometime. Never been. Looks like a blast. I assume the top shot of mono is for giving the line a bit of stretch?

You do not ever want a top shot of mono for tarpon fishing on a casting reel. That defeats the whole purpose of braid in the first place. The reason you want 100 lb. braid on top is so you can pack more line capacity on top. You'll appreciate the capacity when you hook up. Also, the braid works well for fishing circle hooks. Tarpon have mouths like plywood so you want stiff line to make that point stick.

Unlike with tarpon, for kings as well as Jacks you need the stretch to absorb the bone jaring strike of a king.

With Reds, and Big uglies, especially in the surf you need the mono for abrasion resistance in the sand.

Okay thanks guys. I appreciate it. Looks like I have lots of good uses for it. I'll use for Kings and Tarpon. I'll stick to my olders Penns and Newells for Bull Reds.
