New way to Catch Red Snapper in Federal Water Now & Bring Home Red Snapper Fillets
I saw this earlier today:
Tuesday, February 16, 2010
ATTENTION!, Notice!, etc...
During March, April and May, the partyboat Capt. John will be running 10 hour offshore, day trips that will be "catch and release" only. The cost is $85 per fisherman on each trip. The unique finish when returning to Pier 19 is that you will receive a voucher, good for $30 worth of any fresh off the boat seafood at Katie's Seafood. Katie's is located at Galveston's Pier 19, just west of the Capt. John's office.
NOTE: Fishing licenses are not required for these offshore "catch and release" trips since no fish will be landed at Pier 19.
A variety of rocks, wrecks, gas and oil production platforms located from 25 to 50 miles offshore will be fished.
These 10 hour "Catch & Release" trips, with a guaranteed $30.00 in seafood of your choice from Katies is an innovative idea from Capt. Johnny Williams.
So, I am guessing that there will be a LOT of floating dead red snapper that were gut hooked and/or not vented and others getting eaten by flipper on these trips. Then, on top of that, most of these people will probably go buy commercially caught red snapper at the seafood market and help support those guys.
It’s hard to imagine that the Feds would rather have people catch and throw back a bunch of red snapper to die (I’m sure way more than two per person), then go to the seafood market to buy more dead red snapper instead of just letting everyone keep 2 measly fish per person per day year round and be happy. That is so messed up (like everyone didn’t already know that, lol).
Oh, I also stumbled across this video when searching for things to do in Pensacola and thought it was definitely interesting:

SOS BS
That's what these SOS guys want (and yes, Johnny Williams supports SOS) and that is to mix the snapper from commercial/rec allocations. This may in fact be an attempt to set the stage for justifying trading snapper between rec/comm allocations via catch shares.
Snapper are NOT a catch and release species, at least in deeper federal waters - this is a BAD idea IF you are concerned for the fish. This could be seen as a good idea if GREEED is your primary motivation, so yes, it fits right in with the SOS philosophy and really doesn't surprise me. In fact, these SOS dudes are up in arms about the supposed illegal fishing in federal waters by private recs claiming to fish state waters...this one headboat will kill more snapper due to bycatch mortality than a hundred illegal private recs.
This smacks of of what one outfit was doing a while back - offer "consulting" for a fee and give a "free" offshore trip in return...a scam to avoid the regs as these guys didn't have the required permits. Pitiful.
Tom

Johnny Williams only supports Johnny Williams. He really doesn't support SOS. He supports a quata for Party Boats. He could care less about the rest of the CFH sector.

I'll bet this one is too boring or not worth discussing or has already been hashed out elsewhere. Don't expect to see any SOS'ers in this one...

cricket ... cricket ... cricket
But I was gonna say, I practice red snapper catch 'n' release all the time! It's not especially fun, but after catching my two, you HAVE to keep throwing them back. You can't try for AJ and grouper without throwing back a whole passel of 'em. Yeah, and some get foul hooked and die.
And who said red snapper was ONLY a meat fish for killing? Come on, I've had to throw back hundreds because of these stupid fish laws. I throw back all kinds of fish, for that matter. I am not a SOS fan but you fellas aren't making too much sense in this rodeo, amigos.

Well Swells down der in SOTX ya must never seen a cattle boat fishing snapper 50 miles out in deep water, I have seen hundreds floating behind them cattle boats and that was when they could keep one, No way deckies can or will keep up with deflating 40 people chucking goldfish overboard. their release mortality rate is pretty low in deep water.
as for the whole other wrongness of this.... well if ya don't know your too dumb to talk to.J/K
